Merrett & Co has extensive experience of local authority issues. Most of our lawyers have worked in the public sector for many years
and continue to do so, as external advisors
in long term partnerships with many local authority clients.
The breadth of support given to in-house council teams varies from dealing with planning inquiries to running the entire legal department. The type of support offered is entirely flexible, dependent on the council’s needs. We can take on the on-going workload of the council’s department, provide locum cover in times of absence or overload, or simply act on one-off assignments.
We can advise on any local government issue that a District Council would encounter - the only exception being employment law. We offer a comprehensive range of planning, highways and compulsory purchase services, covering all aspects, including Public and Local Plan Inquiries, judicial reviews, CLEUD applications, highway drainage and traffic management issues, and negotiation of CPO compensation.
Our property services range from handling site acquisitions and disposals, and green and brown field development, to the granting and taking of leases, and neighbour and boundary disputes.
We advise on environmental and licensing issues, such as nuisance actions, prosecution, regulatory issues concerning waste and IPPC, and public entertainment licence applications.
Our advice also extends to procurement and corporate governance issues, including drafting OJEC notices and tender documentation, negotiating procurement contracts, and advising on ‘best value’ procurement and community consultation policies.
